Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s Role:
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government developed a Provincial Growth and Development Strategy (PGDS) with the aim of growing the economy and creating employment, whilst redressing the socio-economic challenges confronting the economy. The PGDS embodies the provincial 2030 developmental vision and strives to develop KwaZulu-Natal as a gateway to South and Southern Africa. The provincial government regards the creation of an aerotropolis around King Shaka

International Airport as a catalyst to deepen economic development and advance urbanisation in the province. We envisage the development of an aerotropolis as a springboard to our aspirations of developing a resilient regional economy through new industrial opportunities, centres of business, tourism, and trade. To accelerate implementation, the Provincial Government is developing an integrated aerotropolis strategy aimed at conceptualising and identifying quick-win economic opportunities to realise the province’s developmental vision.
